Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has clarified why former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was denied access to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, at the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).

In an interview with Oyerepa TV, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that Dr. Bawumia violated a pre-arranged protocol that had been agreed upon with the Office of the former Vice President and the security agencies.

“There was an agreement that he comes with just a few people, but upon his arrival, he was with a huge number of persons and that was a breach of the agreement, which is why he could not be allowed to see him,” he said.

He further dismissed the significance of the attempted visit, stating:

“I don’t think Dr. Bawumia going to see him would have made any difference. He did not honour the agreement with EOCO and NIB to create the atmosphere that enables EOCO and NIB.”

Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently in detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). According to Deputy Attorney General, his arrest is linked to alleged crimes including fraud and money laundering.

Although Wontumi was granted bail, his release has been delayed due to a court application to vary the bail bond terms, despite his lawyers meeting the initial bond conditions.

His legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, has expressed hope that he may be released from custody today.

This situation has sparked significant political tension, with supporters of the NPP protesting what they describe as unfair treatment and excessive bail conditions.
