A wave of discontent has swept through the Effutu constituency as angry foot soldiers and local executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) hit the streets in a protest against President John Dramani Mahama’s latest nomination for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position.

The protest was triggered after the President nominated Rev. Atta Mensah to replace the previously rejected candidate, Abraham Henry Arthur, who failed to secure the required endorsement—receiving only 9 out of 26 votes from Assembly Members.

However, the fresh nomination has sparked further outrage. Many party supporters claim that Rev. Atta Mensah is not their preferred choice and does not represent the interests of the grassroots.

Protesters argue that Abraham Henry Arthur has already built strong connections within the constituency and has laid essential groundwork for development. They insist his efforts and popularity among the rank and file make him the rightful choice for the MCE role.

“We were not consulted, and this decision clearly disregards the voice of the grassroots,” stated Bernard Mensah, a branch executive who led the protest. “We are calling on President Mahama to reinstate Abraham Henry Arthur in the spirit of unity, party cohesion, and development.”

The demonstrators have urged the President to reconsider his decision to avoid deepening internal divisions that could undermine the NDC’s strength in the constituency ahead of upcoming elections.
