Alonso declares ‘start of new era’ at Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has officially been unveiled as the club’s new manager, ushering in what he calls “the start of an era” at the iconic Spanish club.

Alonso, 43, was appointed on a three-year deal, succeeding veteran coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has left to take over the Brazil national team.

The managerial transition comes at a crucial time for Real Madrid following a turbulent season. The club lost their La Liga crown to Barcelona, fell short in both the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercopa finals, and were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals by Arsenal.

Speaking at his unveiling at Valdebebas, Madrid’s training complex, Alonso struck an optimistic tone.

“It’s the start of an era,” he declared. “The Real Madrid fans are excited to begin this new era, to grow, and to make the history of this club even greater.”

Alonso’s return to the Bernabéu comes 11 years after he left the club as a player. He returns with impressive managerial credentials, having led Bayer Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023-24 season.

“We have fantastic players, a team that has a lot of potential,” Alonso said. “That gives me a lot of reason to come here with energy and hope to get the best out of all the players and build a great team.”

The former midfield maestro, known for his intelligence and leadership on the pitch, emphasized his desire to lead a team that embodies Real Madrid’s passion and legacy.

“I want a team that transmits emotion, energy, ambitious play and connects with the fans,” he said.

Alonso also paid tribute to his predecessor and former manager Carlo Ancelotti, acknowledging the Italian’s influence on his coaching career.

“Carlo was my coach, a great person and a huge influence. Without his mastery, I probably wouldn’t be here. I take over and carry on his legacy with great honour and pride.”

Alonso will officially begin his role on June 1, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup set to take place next month. Fans and football pundits alike will be watching closely as the club enters a new chapter under one of its most beloved former players.

    As an aspiring President of the University of Ghana Students'
    Representative Council (UGSRC) for the 2026/2027 academic year,
    Abraham seeks to champion a vision centered on student welfare,
    accountability, inclusiveness, innovation, and effective representation.
