A community-led search operation is in full swing in Diaso, located in Ghana’s Central Region, following the collapse of an illegal mining pit that has trapped several miners underground.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, May 24, 2025, when a galamsey pit caved in while miners were working inside. According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the collapse triggered immediate rescue efforts by residents and local volunteers.
Over 24 hours since the disaster, no bodies have been recovered, and hopes are fading among families and community members anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
Despite the challenges, rescue efforts are ongoing, with determined volunteers and emergency teams working tirelessly to remove debris and search for survivors.
The incident once again underscores the hazardous nature of illegal mining, widely known in Ghana as galamsey, which continues to claim lives and cause devastating environmental harm in mining communities across the country.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the number of miners trapped or the cause of the collapse. Meanwhile, community leaders are calling for urgent government intervention and improved safety measures in high-risk mining zones.
