Accra, Ghana – May 20, 2025

The Greater Accra Market Association has thrown its weight behind the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) ongoing decongestion exercise aimed at clearing unauthorized traders and restoring order in the Central Business District (CBD).

Market Leaders Applaud Government Efforts

In a statement released Tuesday, the association commended the AMA and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) for taking decisive steps to address the long-standing challenges of congestion, sanitation issues, and traffic obstruction caused by street hawking.

Madam Grace Ayishetu, Chairperson of the Association, emphasized that while the livelihoods of traders matter, there is an urgent need to maintain order and ensure a clean, organized environment for business. “We believe this exercise is timely. A structured market system benefits both traders and customers, and we are committed to cooperating fully with the authorities,” she said.

A Call for Designated Trading Zones

The Association also urged the government to accelerate plans for the creation of designated vending zones and to engage with trader unions for a sustainable long-term solution. This follows earlier remarks by Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, who announced a GH₵2,000 fine for unauthorized trading and hinted at future plans for regulated street vending.

AMA officials have reiterated their commitment to working closely with market leaders and traders to ensure the decongestion exercise is conducted peacefully and with dignity.
