The University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) has launched the “Light Up UG” initiative, donating 30 streetlights to improve visibility and safety across the campus.

    Tackling Safety Concerns Head-On

The initiative comes as part of the SRC’s commitment to providing a secure environment for students, especially during night hours when many walk between lecture halls, halls of residence, and other facilities. Poor lighting has long been a concern, with students citing it as a major contributor to incidents of theft and harassment.

A Practical Step Toward Campus Safety

By donating and overseeing the installation of the 30 streetlights, the SRC aims to reduce these risks significantly and enhance the general security infrastructure on campus. The lights will be strategically installed in dark and high-traffic areas to maximize coverage and impact.

    Students and Authorities React

The move has been met with praise from many students who view it as a timely and practical intervention. Some university security officials have also commended the SRC’s initiative, noting that improved lighting can assist in surveillance and rapid response.

More Than Just Lights—It’s a Statement

UGSRC leaders have emphasized that the Light Up UG initiative symbolizes more than just infrastructure; it represents their dedication to student welfare, safety, and proactive governance.
