The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has assured the public that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will not interfere in the ongoing review of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, Ayariga stressed that the government respects institutional independence and will allow the YEA to carry out its mandate without political interference.

“The YEA operates as a state agency with its own legal framework and leadership. If they believe the Zoomlion contract needs restructuring, the NDC government will not stand in the way,”

    Supporting Transparency and Accountability

The Majority Leader’s comments come days after YEA CEO Malik Basintale declared that he would not renew the current contract with Zoomlion unless reforms are made. Ayariga acknowledged the need for transparency and called for a process that ensures value for money.

“We support efforts that bring about greater efficiency and benefit to our youth. But we will not micromanage or politicize contractual decisions of state agencies,” he added.

    Background: Calls for Contract Overhaul

The long-standing YEA–Zoomlion partnership has faced public scrutiny over alleged inefficiencies and lack of accountability. Civil society groups have repeatedly demanded that the contract be reviewed or scrapped entirely.

Basintale’s firm stance has gained public support, especially among youth groups and transparency advocates, who argue that workers under the module deserve better pay and conditions.

    Social Media Applause and Debate

The Majority Leader’s assurance sparked fresh discussions on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. While some Ghanaians welcomed the non-interference stance, others called for parliamentary oversight to ensure the contract’s revision truly reflects the public interest.
