Tragedy Strikes Madina on Good Friday
On the night of Good Friday, March 29, 2025, a catastrophic fire erupted near the Madina Redco Flats in Accra, Ghana, at approximately 11:15 p.m. The blaze rapidly consumed a densely populated informal settlement, destroying over 150 wooden structures and 20 metal containers used for both residential and commercial purposes.
Firefighting Efforts and Casualties
Firefighters from the Madina Fire Station responded within two minutes of the alarm, with additional support from Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Headquarters. Despite their swift response, the fire had already reached an advanced stage upon their arrival. The teams managed to confine the flames by 12:02 a.m. and fully extinguished them by 2:22 a.m.
Tragically, a young Nigerian woman known as Beauty, believed to be in her early twenties, was trapped in the inferno and lost her life. Her charred remains have been handed over to the Madina Police for preservation and further investigation.
Investigation and Community Impact
Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the destruction and investigating the cause of the fire. The incident has reignited concerns over fire risks in Accra’s informal settlements, where densely packed wooden shelters and mixed-use structures are common. Such areas often face challenges with emergency access and infrastructure, complicating disaster response.
The GNFS has repeatedly emphasized the need for improved safety protocols in high-density urban zones, particularly in unregulated communities. Friday’s tragedy underscores the persistent vulnerability of these neighborhoods, where rapid urbanization frequently outpaces fire prevention planning.
