NIB intercepts $350m worth of cocaine in Cape Coast

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has intercepted a major cocaine shipment, seizing approximately 3.3 tonnesof the illicit substance en route to Accra from the Western Region.

Operation Details

Acting on intelligence, NIB officers stopped a tipper truck at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast on March 4, 2025. Upon inspection, they discovered 143 sacks of cocaine concealed beneath sand in the truck’s cargo.

This interception marks one of the largest drug busts in Ghana’s history, signaling a major victory in the fight against narcotics trafficking. The sheer quantity of the cocaine suggests the involvement of a sophisticated smuggling network, potentially linked to international drug cartels.

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to uncover the source of the cocaine, the intended recipients, and any potential accomplices within Ghana and beyond. The driver and occupants of the truck have been taken into custodyfor interrogation.

joint security task force, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), has been deployed to track down other individuals connected to the smuggling operation.

Government’s Commitment to the Fight Against Drugs

The government has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking. In a statement, the NIB emphasized its commitment to intelligence-led operations to combat organized crime and drug syndicates operating in Ghana.

This latest seizure underscores Ghana’s strategic importance in the global drug trade and the need for heightened vigilance in border security and port surveillance.
