The University for Development Studies (UDS) community in Dungu is grappling with grief and fear following the shocking death of a pharmacy student, Mohammed Zakiu Wunpini. On the night of September 25, 2024, Zakiu’s lifeless body was discovered in an uncompleted building between the Citadel and Kumbung Hostels on campus. Zakiu, who was set to enter his third year, suffered multiple stab wounds, a sign of a violent attack that has left the university community shaken.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Initial reports suggest that Zakiu may have been the victim of a robbery, as his motorcycle and mobile phone were missing from the scene. Earlier in the evening, he had gone out with a friend to watch a football match but did not return. The location of his body and the nature of his injuries indicate a possible targeted attack.

The university authorities also visited the regional police headquarters to follow up on the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement is actively pursuing leads in an effort to apprehend those responsible for the murder.

A Call for Increased Campus Security

This senseless act of violence has sparked conversations about security on the UDS campus, as students and staff express concerns over their safety. The tragic event has also ignited calls for improved safety measures and heightened vigilance, particularly in less trafficked areas like the one where Zakiu’s body was found.

Final Farewell

Zakiu’s funeral rites are being held today, September 30, 2024, in Gumani, near the Oasis Restaurant. His death has left a lasting impact on his peers, lecturers, and the broader UDS community, who mourn the loss of a promising young man.

As investigations continue, the university remains in a state of grief, awaiting further information on the case. The incident highlights the urgent need for campus safety initiatives to prevent such tragedies in the future.
