In a groundbreaking campaign announcement, Vice President and presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia committed to making smartphones more accessible to Ghanaians if elected president. Addressing a large gathering, Dr. Bawumia revealed a visionary plan to collaborate with leading phone manufacturers to provide smartphones on a credit basis, allowing citizens to pay as little as one or two cedis per month.

“We will make mobile phones accessible. My government will partner with phone manufacturers so that Ghanaians can afford them on credit and pay 1 or 2 cedis every month,” Dr. Bawumia declared, emphasizing the central role of digital inclusion in his administration’s agenda.

This initiative, he explained, would dramatically enhance access to information and communication technology, bridge the digital divide, and empower more Ghanaians to engage in the digital economy. It forms a critical part of a broader strategy to enhance the technological landscape and stimulate economic growth.

Dr. Bawumia underscored the importance of smartphone access for modern living, highlighting its role in education, business, and social connectivity. He pointed out that the high cost of smartphones currently excludes many Ghanaians from these opportunities, a barrier his government aims to dismantle through this innovative scheme.

“Access to smartphones is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens up opportunities for education, business, and staying connected with loved ones. By making smartphones affordable, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital age,” Dr. Bawumia added.

In the Northern Region, Dr. Bawumia’s presence has consistently attracted massive crowds, and he enjoys strong support in Bole from a growing number of New Patriotic Party (NPP) enthusiasts. He further detailed that the plan would involve strategic partnerships with major phone manufacturers to ensure devices are available at low costs and on favorable payment terms. The initiative also includes educational measures to teach users how to leverage smartphones for personal and professional growth.
