A prominent rice farmer and producer of Tongu Rice in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, Sina Peter, was tragically shot dead on his farm at Yorve, near Agordome. Peter, in his mid-40s and owner of the Sinagro Guest House in Sogakope, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Sogakope District Hospital after being shot by unknown assailants on Monday, May 20, at around 7 pm.
Johnson Kobby Amedzo, the Assembly Member for Xikpo-Agbagorme Electoral Area and a close friend of the deceased, reported that Peter, the Rice farmer and his workers were in the process of harvesting rice when the incident occurred. Amedzo revealed that the deceased, who also operated a rice mill at Akakpokope near Dabala Junction, was shot while attempting to investigate gunshots that had already injured one of his workers, Kafui, as they were packing the harvested rice into a vehicle.
Kafui, who was critically injured, was transferred to the Ho Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving medical care. Families of the deceased are working closely with the Sogakope Police to gather more information regarding this tragic event.
Sources suggest that a land dispute involving the deceased might have been the trigger for this violent attack. Despite the ongoing investigations, the Sogakope Police have refrained from commenting further on the matter.
Sina Peter, the rice farmer, a former Marketing Manager of Brazil Rice, is survived by his wife and four children – one boy and three girls. His body has been sent to the Sogakope District morgue awaiting autopsy.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
