The Global Citizen Scholarship is a unique opportunity offered by the MPower Financing to all individuals with a dream of pursuing higher education in the U.S.A and Canada. MPower Financing, a financial organization founded in 2014 by Manu Smadja and Mike Davis, two former international students, aims to remove the financial obstacles students often face when pursuing international education.

Global Citizen Scholarship

The Global Citizen Scholarship is awarded annually to international and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students enrolled in institutions supported by MPower financing. The organization opens application to individuals of various nationality to compete for the award. The winner of the award receives the grand prize of $10,000 worth of educational scholarship. Two additional winners are also awarded a $2,000 scholarship.

Criteria for application for the MPower Global Citizen Scholarship

To be eligible for the Global Citizen Scholarship, the applicant must be accepted at, or enrolled in, a full-time degree program at a U.S. or Canadian school supported by MPOWER. The student must be an international student legally allowed to study in the U.S. or Canada, as applicable.

For study in the U.S., this includes U.S. permanent residents (Green Card holders), individuals protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, or those with a valid visa permitting study in the U.S. For study in Canada, this includes Canadian permanent residents or individuals with a valid Canadian study permit. Applicants do not need to be MPOWER borrowers or applicants to apply for the MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria outlined above.

Application process

Global Citizen Scholarship

Applicants are advised to research more on the terms and conditions and ensure that they meet all requirements for the Global Citizen Scholarship before beginning their application. All applications are done online and are completely free of charge. Applicants will be required to fill out an online application form, providing accurately all the necessary information. Any application that is found to contain erroneous, expired, cancelled, fraudulent, or fake information will be nullified by the organization.

Applicants will be required to submit an essay in English with a maximum of 500 words on how their international education will empower their positive impact locally or globally. Applicants will be judged based on the quality of their essay. The essay scored based on a combination of the applicants ability to demonstrate clarity of thought, a compelling goals and vision, and superior communication skills in English, the extent to which there is a clear nexus between the applicant’s intended field of study and their goals and aspirations and the applicant’s potential as a scientist, entrepreneur, leader, and/or change-maker who will make a positive impact.

Winners will be notified within one month of the submission deadline. The deadline for submission of application is 31st July 2024. More information on the Global Citizen Scholarship can be found on the official website of MPower Financing.
