Five individuals accused of acting as land guards to protect workmen developing a plot of land in Dodowa have each been granted bail of GH₵30,000.00 by an Accra Circuit Court. The accused, Kingsley Dunoo, also known as “Raggae” and a security man, Mohammed Nartey, a vulcanizer, Clement Tetteh, a borehole operator, Dodzi Atsidutse, a mason, and Evans Acheampong, a construction laborer, all pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and prohibition of land guard activities.

Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackom opposed bail, arguing that the release of the accused could hinder further investigation and that they might not return for trial. However, the court, presided over by Mrs. Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, overruled this objection and granted bail with the condition of two sureties each, to be justified. The case is adjourned to June 25, 2024.

bail

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Fred Kwaku Anning from Weija, Accra, representing Ages Investment Company Limited, had petitioned the Director-General/CID regarding threats and activities by land guards over a 662.15-acre parcel of land in Dodowa, claimed by the Odoi Kese family of Obosomase. Despite a High Court interim injunction on October 7, 2023, prohibiting the Odoi Kese family from interacting with the land, they allegedly continued to employ land guards to intimidate others.

bail

On May 8, 2024, police, led by the complainant, arrested the accused at the Dodowa site where they were guarding workmen developing the land for one Prophet Kwasi Awoso, who was unknown to the police. A search revealed a pump-action gun with seven live cartridges hidden nearby. The accused denied knowledge of the weapon and stated in their caution statement that they were hired by Isaac Ametepe of Wise Ink Investment Limited to guard the workmen. Preliminary investigations suggested the accused were part of a group formed to harass potential land buyers in the area.

As the case progresses, the court’s decision to grant bail reflects a commitment to upholding legal rights while ensuring justice is served. All eyes now turn to the upcoming trial date in June, where further light will be shed on the complex dynamics of land ownership and security.
