I became alarmed when NDC started sponsoring their youth to study law – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has publicly acknowledged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its successful rebranding, which he says has made the party more acceptable to the Ghanaian public despite its controversial beginnings through a military coup.

NDC’s Campus Struggles in the Past

Reflecting on his university days at the University of Cape Coast, the Effutu MP revealed that it was once considered politically risky for students to openly associate with the NDC. He recalled that student candidates linked to the party consistently lost campus elections due to their affiliation.

The Rise of TEIN and Youth Engagement

Afenyo-Markin highlighted the strategic role of the Tertiary Institutions Education Network (TEIN) in reshaping the NDC’s image and increasing its appeal among university students. According to him, TEIN played a critical role in the NDC’s resurgence on campuses across the country.

The Legal Profession Strategy

Afenyo-Markin expressed particular admiration for what he described as a “deliberate and strategic” move by the NDC to empower its youth to study law.

“Look at the legal profession. I became alarmed some six years ago when I realized that the NDC was deliberately sponsoring… I think they had a strategy, encouraging a lot of their youth to study law because they recognized that as one of their weaknesses,” he said in a recent interview with KSM.

He noted that traditionally, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had dominated the legal space, assuming it was their natural stronghold. However, the increasing number of young NDC lawyers has prompted a rethink within the NPP.

“In politics, when you go to court, you start noticing this young man is NDC, this young woman is also NDC, and then you realize it’s time to sit up,” he remarked.

A Call for Strategic Awareness

Afenyo-Markin’s comments have stirred discussions across the political spectrum, with many praising his candid reflection and recognition of the NDC’s transformation. His remarks serve as a reminder of the evolving nature of political strategy in Ghana, where youth engagement, education, and professional influence are becoming critical tools for party growth.
