Tema MCE initiates emergency repairs on deplorable harbour road

Madam Ebi Bright, the newly confirmed Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has wasted no time in addressing one of the city’s most urgent infrastructure concerns, the severely deteriorated stretch of the Harbour Road, also known as the Akosombo Road.
Just days into her tenure, Madam Bright led a team of engineers from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to launch an emergency rehabilitation project on a critical 300-metre section of the road.

The targeted portion lies at the lowest point along the entire stretch and is in the worst condition, posing serious hazards to both haulage trucks and daily commuters.
Speaking on-site, Madam Bright explained that the primary goal of the emergency works is to provide immediate relief to the heavy volume of traffic that relies on the Harbour Road each day.

“This road plays a vital role in the transportation of goods from the Tema Port. Its current state, with large trenches and damaged surfaces makes it unsafe for vehicles, especially haulage trucks. This intervention is to prevent potential accidents and improve flow,” she said.
Truck drivers and motorists have long expressed concern over the road’s deteriorating condition, fearing that the large potholes could cause vehicles to overturn, especially under heavy loads.
In addition to the emergency road repairs, Madam Bright also announced plans to desilt the drains along the remaining two-kilometre stretch of road leading to the Tema Motorway Interchange. This is to enhance water flow and reduce flooding as the rainy season approaches.

“With the rains setting in, effective drainage is key to preserving our roads and protecting motorists. We are acting swiftly to address this as part of our broader infrastructure improvement agenda,” she noted.
The emergency works form part of the MCE’s larger commitment to improving urban infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for Tema residents. The initiative has been welcomed by stakeholders in the transport and port logistics sectors, who see it as a sign of proactive and responsive leadership.
