HeFRA shuts down Tamale Technical University Hospital over poor sanitary conditions

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital after inspectors uncovered severe insanitary conditions at the facility.
According to officials, the decision followed an unannounced inspection that revealed deplorable hygiene standards, including improper waste disposal, malfunctioning sanitation systems, and poor infection control measures that posed significant risks to patients and staff.
HeFRA stated that the facility’s operations violated sections of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), which mandates health institutions to maintain minimum safety and sanitation standards.

In a statement released on Monday, the Agency said the hospital will remain closed until it meets all regulatory requirements and passes a reinspection.
“Our inspection team found conditions unfit for clinical service delivery. Patient safety cannot be compromised,” the statement emphasized.
Students and staff of Tamale Technical University have since been advised to seek healthcare services at alternative facilities within the metropolis while management works to rectify the deficiencies.

The closure adds to a growing list of health facilities recently sanctioned by HeFRA for non-compliance, as the agency intensifies efforts to ensure quality healthcare delivery nationwide.
