GHANASCO@65th: First Lady Lordina Mahama Launches Anniversary, Celebrates Legacy of Excellence
Highlighting the school’s role in shaping Ghana’s future leaders
First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama officially launched the 65th anniversary celebrations of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale, highlighting the institution’s enduring legacy and its pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s future leaders.
As a proud alumna, Mrs. Mahama emphasized the school’s impact on her personal development and that of her husband, President John Dramani Mahama. She noted that the discipline, friendships, and experiences gained at GHANASCO laid the foundation for their leadership journeys.
“GHANASCO is more than just a school; it is a community, a heritage, and a training ground for leaders, professionals, artisans, and patriots,” she stated.
Mrs. Mahama also acknowledged the achievements of notable alumni, including Alhaji Alhassan Andani (former Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana), Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Awal (former Minister for Business Development), John Jinapor (Minister for Energy and Green Transition), Alhassan Suhuyini (Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways), football legends Abedi Pele and Kwame Ayew, and Professor Bashiru Imoro Saeed (Vice Chancellor of Tamale Technical University).
The First Lady reiterated the government’s commitment to education, highlighting initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing teacher training, and prioritizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Echoing her sentiments, Professor Saeed emphasized GHANASCO’s mission to cultivate future leaders, exemplified by the achievements of both President and Mrs. Mahama.
Headmaster Mr. Douglas Haruna Yakubu reflected on the school’s evolution and urged students to emulate the successes of their alumni while avoiding negative behaviors such as vandalism and drug abuse. He appealed to the government for assistance in providing essential facilities, including a library, assembly hall, dormitory, and improved sanitation.
Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu assured the school of the government’s support, announcing that tenders for the construction of an assembly hall and dormitory would be issued soon. He also pledged to address the shortage of classroom furniture and empower school authorities to enforce discipline.
The 65th anniversary will be commemorated in October this year. The launch event was attended by dignitaries, including Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John, John Jinapor, Alhassan Suhuyini, Mayor of Tamale Abu Takoro, and Regional Educational Director Alhassan Alidu Jnr.
