Protecting PTAs Reinstatement: GNAT Urges Legal Support for Schools

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is advocating for legal safeguards to protect the government’s recent decision to reinstate Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in schools. This important move follows the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) official announcement confirming the full reinstatement of PTAs in all pre-tertiary schools across Ghana.

What Prompted the Reinstatement of PTAs?
On July 17, the GES issued a directive in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to enhancing stakeholder involvement in the education sector. This initiative aims to strengthen collaboration among parents, teachers, and local communities, ultimately improving the quality of education for Ghanaian learners.
Immediate Implementation Across Schools
All heads of public senior high, technical, and STEM schools have been instructed to implement this directive without delay. This reinstatement is not just a formality; it represents a significant shift towards greater parental engagement in the educational process.

GNAT’s Call for Legislative Protection
In an interview with Citi News on July 17, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah expressed support for the reinstatement but emphasized the critical need for legislative backing. He stated, “While we have restored the PTA, let us all agree that parents are the true owners of the schools. Now that we have returned the schools to them, no future government should come and reverse this decision.”
Musah’s comments highlight the importance of establishing a governance framework that ensures the sustainability of PTAs in the educational landscape. “We must agree on the kind of governance framework we want to maintain to ensure our children are properly trained,” he added.
The Importance of PTAs in Education
The reinstatement of PTAs is a pivotal step in fostering a collaborative environment where parents, teachers, and communities work together to support students’ educational journeys. PTAs play a crucial role in enhancing communication between parents and schools, facilitating essential resources, and promoting community involvement.
