Presidency Clears GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi After Apology: “Matter Considered Closed”
The Presidency has officially closed the chapter on the recent controversy involving Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, after he issued a public apology last week.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Felix Kwakye Ofosu , the spokesperson for Government Communications, confirmed that no further action would be taken against Mr. Gyamfi.
“The President acknowledges Mr. Gyamfi’s apology and views it as a sincere expression of remorse. In light of this, the matter has been considered closed,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated.
Though the briefing stopped short of revisiting the details of the incident, it followed a wave of public backlash and media commentary calling for stricter accountability at GoldBod. Civil society organizations and concerned citizens had urged the government to uphold transparency and ethical leadership in state institutions.
A Public Apology That Calmed the Storm?
Last week, Sammy Gyamfi publicly admitted to what he described as “a l apse in judgment” and promised to rebuild public trust through a renewed commitment to responsible leadership.
His statement appeared to strike a chord in some quarters, especially among party faithful and GoldBod staff, many of whom described the apology as “timely” and “necessary for healing.”
Mixed Reactions From the Public
While some Ghanaians see the Presidency’s decision as fair and conciliatory, others believe it sends the wrong message in a country battling issues of accountability in public service.
“We must be careful not to create the impression that apologies are a substitute for consequences,” one governance expert told reporters.
Still, supporters of the decision argue that leadership also means showing grace, especially when remorse is clearly expressed.
As the dust settles, all eyes will remain on Mr. Gyamfi’s next steps as he continues to lead GoldBod in one of the country’s most sensitive economic sectors.
