ER: Police in Nsawam-Adoagyiri arrest 1 person for unlawful possession of firearms
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at Nsawam-Adoagyiri in Ghana’s Eastern Region, following a series of violent incidents and reprisal attacks that have rocked the township in recent days.
The suspect, identified as Abdul Rauf Salami, a native of Adoagyiri Zongo, was apprehended during an intensified police operation that targeted all key entry and exit points in and around Adoagyiri. According to authorities, the operation was part of a strategic effort to quell unrest and restore order to the embattled community.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the safety and security of Adoagyiri,” a police spokesperson stated.
During the arrest, law enforcement officers retrieved a cache of dangerous weapons, including:
- Two pump-action guns
- Sixty-four rounds of AA ammunition
- A cutlass
- A knife
- An ammunition vest
These items were seized as evidence and are being held as part of ongoing investigations.
The arrest follows a disturbing wave of violence that has led to multiple deaths in the Adoagyiri area, prompting fears of further escalation. Community tensions have been high, with residents demanding swift justice and a stronger police presence.
Photos circulating online showed the body of a deceased individual being taken through Islamic burial rites—a stark reminder of the human toll of the recent clashes.
Abdul Rauf Salami is currently in police custody and assisting with investigations. Authorities have confirmed he will soon be arraigned before court to face charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms and potentially other criminal offences stemming from the recent violence.
The Police Command has called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activity in their communities.
“The safety of our people is our top priority. We urge the public to be vigilant and to support the police with credible information,” the spokesperson added.
Security experts and community leaders have begun advocating for increased civic engagement and peacebuilding efforts in Adoagyiri to prevent further violence. Many believe long-term stability will require collaboration between law enforcement, local authorities, religious leaders, and youth groups.
