Akufo-Addo thanks you all for vilifying him and blaming him for NPP’s defeat – Ursula Owusu

Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has come to the strong defense of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) point fingers at him for the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.

In a passionate Facebook post, Owusu-Ekuful criticized those blaming Akufo-Addo, reminding them of his sacrifices and contributions to the party over the past two decades.

Sarcastically addressing the accusations, she wrote, “Nana Akufo-Addo thanks you all for vilifying him today and blaming him for our defeat. I am sure you would all have given him the credit if we had won.”

Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that Akufo-Addo’s deepest ambition was to ensure a peaceful handover to another NPP president — a goal she says he worked tirelessly to achieve. “Never mind that his final ambition was to hand over to an NPP president and he said so often,” she added.

Reminding the NPP of Akufo-Addo’s Contributions

She detailed the financial and structural support Akufo-Addo provided while the party was in opposition and in government, including monthly allowances for constituencies, regions, and national offices for eight years.

“Not to mention the monthly top-up he provided for all MPs for 8 years, which was more than our take-home pay. We now say he wanted to destroy the party he sweated to help build? Thank you,” she pointed out.

The former minister listed key achievements under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, including keeping the power supply stable, implementing free education policies, creating jobs, and expanding the country’s road network.

In her fiery post, Owusu-Ekuful questioned the loyalty of those turning against Akufo-Addo now that the party has faced defeat.

“If after a lifetime of sacrifice for democracy, the rule of law, and building our political brand, we can look him in the face or call him all manner of names behind his back — he says no problem. He accepts all the blame,” she stated.

However, she noted that it is unjust to expect that every supporter could be appointed in government, and blamed disgruntled members for stoking internal divisions.

“Like all humans, he also made mistakes but we expected more from him because he is superhuman? But the question some of us are grappling with now is, if we don’t appreciate the efforts of people like Akufo-Addo, is the NPP worth dying for?” she quizzed.
