KATH CEO, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah Relieved Of His Position
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, has officially been relieved of his position following a meeting with Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Despite having two years left on his contract, Prof. Addai-Mensah exits his role after leading some of KATH’s most ambitious modernization projects, notably the ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’ (HeKAP). Under his leadership, the hospital’s dialysis capacity expanded dramatically—from just two machines in 2022 to over 20 today—along with major retooling efforts and the construction of a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical block.
Petition and Allegations Spark Exit
Prof. Addai-Mensah’s removal comes amid mounting pressure. A group petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, calling for an investigation into what they described as “indiscriminate misappropriation” and breaches of procurement laws at KATH. Led by lawyer Kwame Adofo, the six-page petition accused the outgoing CEO of managerial incompetence and called for his swift dismissal.
However, the allegations were met with strong opposition from labour unions within the hospital. Staff groups dismissed the petition as baseless and riddled with inaccuracies, defending Prof. Addai-Mensah’s leadership and track record.
An Accomplished Scholar and Administrator
Prof. Addai-Mensah, who assumed office on December 1, 2022, was appointed by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and approved by the KATH Board, chaired by Ambassador Nana Effah-Apenteng.
Before his KATH appointment, he was an Associate Professor of Haematology, Immunology, and Global Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and served as Vice-Dean of Students. His extensive academic background includes:
- BSc in Human Biology and MBChB from KNUST
- MSc in Biomedical Sciences from University of Westminster, UK
- PhD in Immunology and Biotechnology from RWTH University, Aachen, Germany
- Taught component of an MBA in Strategic Management
Prof. Addai-Mensah also boasts international research experience in Germany and has published widely in the fields of Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Haematology, and Public Health.
What’s Next for KATH?
The government is expected to announce a replacement CEO for KATH in the coming week. All eyes are now on the Ministry of Health as stakeholders await clarity on the hospital’s leadership transition.
Meanwhile, Prof. Addai-Mensah’s supporters credit him with initiating transformative changes at KATH that will outlast his tenure. His detractors, however, insist that accountability and transparency must take precedence.

As news of his removal spreads, Ghanaians are split—some hailing the move as necessary for institutional accountability, while others see it as a politically charged action against a reform-minded leader.
