Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, is setting a powerful example by leading a movement to promote regular exercise and healthy living among citizens. His commitment to personal fitness has evolved into a consistent lifestyle, with weekend walking becoming a major part of his health and wellness routine.

Speaking after a nearly two-hour walk with friends in the Trassaco enclave, Mr. Debrah revealed that although he once walked daily, he has now reserved weekends and holidays for this rejuvenating activity. He emphasized that prioritising exercise is a crucial preventive approach to health, especially in a society where many only seek medical attention after falling ill.

“Generally speaking, it’s always better to try and exercise, burn out the calories and be strong. What we normally do is that because most people don’t exercise, we wait and then we get ill and then we go to hospital — that’s curative. But we are of the view that when you exercise, we prevent or avoid getting sick,” he stated.

The walk, popularly referred to as “Walk with Julius,” continues to gain traction, not just as a local initiative but as a potential national health campaign. Mr. Debrah shared that the President John Dramani Mahama had once suggested expanding the walking sessions into a nationwide movement to foster a culture of physical activity among Ghanaians.

“The truth is that President Mahama told me one day; how about we escalate this nationwide and then encourage people to exercise. In fact, I have been waiting for him to start because he brought up the idea,” Mr. Debrah added with a smile.

According to him, President Mahama is a staunch supporter of regular physical exercise and has long envisioned a national platform where Ghanaians could dedicate at least one hour each weekend to fitness whether it be through walking, aerobics, or other forms of vigorous activity.

Mr. Debrah believes this initiative aligns with the broader “Reset Ghana” agenda, which advocates for proactive health management rather than waiting for illness to occur.

“It’s all part of the reset agenda. We don’t want, as a country, to wait and then we start getting ill. In fact, research has shown that the more you exercise, the lesser you get ill,” he stressed.

The Chief of Staff’s initiative is more than just a personal health journey  it’s a call to action for all Ghanaians to embrace a healthier, more active lifestyle.
