Mahama Government Slams Soldier’s Assault on Journalist and Eyewitness at Demolition Site

The government has issued a strong condemnation following a disturbing incident at a demolition site, where a JoyNews reporter was nearly arrested and an eyewitness physically assaulted by a soldier.

Describing the actions as “utterly unacceptable,” the Mahama-led administration emphasized that such behavior undermines the democratic values Ghana stands for.

In a forceful statement released by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government made it clear that this conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“Government condemns the attempted arrest of a JoyNews reporter and the assault of an eyewitness by a soldier at a demolition site. Such actions are utterly unacceptable to the John Mahama administration and have no place in our democratic society,” the statement asserted

President John Dramani Mahama, through the statement, reaffirmed his unwavering stance on protecting press freedom and ensuring journalist safety core elements of a thriving democracy.

“I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists. A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse,” it continued.

Journalist assault at demolition site. In addition to defending media freedoms, the government expressed its broader responsibility to safeguard the rights and safety of all Ghanaians. The statement gave firm assurance that the incident would not be swept under the rug.

“Government also reiterates our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Ghanaian citizens, whose rights must always be protected.”

President Mahama has directed both the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to launch a full-scale investigation into the incident. The government has promised swift disciplinary action against those responsible.

“Appropriate disciplinary and punitive measures must be applied without delay to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences,” the government stated.

This bold and transparent response from the presidency highlights its zero-tolerance approach to abuse of power, especially against members of the press and the general public.
