Tamale, Ghana – April 23, 2025

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a strong condemnation of the recent developments at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), describing them as a direct threat to healthcare delivery, staff safety, and professional dignity.

In a press release dated April 23, 2025, the GMA expressed serious concern over what it called the unjust and abrupt dismissal of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the public harassment and intimidation of medical professionals at the facility. According to the association, these actions constitute a gross violation of due process and compromise the integrity of the healthcare system in the Northern Region and beyond.

“The manner in which the CEO was removed and the subsequent treatment of our colleagues at TTH is not only unlawful but sets a dangerous precedent,” the GMA stated. “This is an attack on the very fabric of professional governance and healthcare integrity.”

The Association stressed that healthcare administrators and medical staff must operate in environments free from political interference and public intimidation if Ghana is to maintain and strengthen its healthcare standards.

Calls for Reinstatement and Protection

The GMA is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the dismissed CEO pending proper investigation procedures, and has demanded a public apology and security assurances for medical staff currently working under tense and unsafe conditions.

Public Reactions

The issue has sparked heated debate online, with Ghanaians voicing support for the GMA’s stance. On X (formerly Twitter), hashtags like #SupportTTHDoctors and #JusticeForHealthcareWorkers began trending by midday. Many users shared stories of the vital role doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital have played in saving lives, urging government and local authorities to act responsibly and protect medical professionals.

What’s Next?

The GMA has hinted at possible industrial action if the situation is not addressed promptly. In the meantime, healthcare services at TTH continue, though under the cloud of uncertainty and unrest among staff.
