Ghana Water begins controlled spillage of Weija dam

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has initiated a controlled spillage of the Weija Dam following a significant rise in water levels triggered by the ongoing rainy season.
According to a statement issued by Stanley Martey, Head of Communications at GWL, the water level at the dam currently stands at 45 feet, just two feet below the maximum safe operating level of 47 feet. The decision to commence the spillage was made to safeguard the dam’s structural integrity and prevent potential flooding.

“To safeguard the structural integrity of the dam and prevent flooding, we have initiated minimal spillage,” the statement said.
GWL is urging residents in downstream communities to evacuate immediately as a precautionary measure, highlighting the urgency of early response to avert disaster. The statement emphasized the importance of cooperationfrom the public and close adherence to safety advisories from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant agencies.

Communities identified as most at risk include:
- Tetegu
- Oblogo
- Pambros Salt
- Lower McCarthy Hill
- Lower Weija
- Bojo Beach
- Adakope
- Other nearby settlements
The Ga West Municipal Assembly has also been directed to desilt the estuary and clear refuse along river channels to allow for the free flow of excess water into the sea.

GWL confirmed that it has informed all key stakeholders, including NADMO, National Security, traditional and opinion leaders, and property owners in the affected zones.
The public is being called upon to cooperate fully to prevent a repeat of previous flood incidents linked to dam spillage. Residents are strongly advised to follow all safety instructions provided by local authorities to ensure their safety and that of their property.
