Education Minister to Propose Bill for New University in Bono Region

Haruna Iddrisu Eyes Expansion of Tertiary Education Access
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced his intention to present a bill in Parliament later this year to establish a new public university in the Bono Region. This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to decentralize higher education and expand access to tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking at a regional education stakeholders’ meeting, the Minister emphasized the need for equitable distribution of tertiary institutions to ensure all regions benefit from national development. “It is unacceptable that some regions still lack fully-fledged public universities. The Bono Region deserves a centre of academic excellence to cater to the growing population of students,” he stated.
Focus on Science, Agriculture, and Entrepreneurship

The proposed university is expected to focus on science, agriculture, and entrepreneurial training — areas aligned with Ghana’s development goals. The initiative, if passed into law, will also come with significant investment in infrastructure, faculty recruitment, and research funding to foster innovation and industry relevance.
Broad Stakeholder Support Expected
Education stakeholders, traditional leaders, and youth groups in the region have expressed enthusiasm over the proposal, calling it a long-overdue initiative. Many believe the establishment of a university will not only boost education but also create jobs and spur regional economic growth.
