Victorious NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn to Be Sworn In Today Amidst Chaotic Rerun in Ablekuma North

Hon. Ewurabena Aubynn (MP elect for Ablekuma North)

In a historic and emotionally charged political journey, Ewurabena Aubynn, the Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, is set to be officially sworn into office today, Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate emerged victorious after a fiercely contested and violence-marred parliamentary rerun.

Ewurabena Aubynn, who had long declared her commitment to transformative leadership for the people of Ablekuma North, took to social media on July 21 to formally invite constituents, party supporters, and the general public to attend her swearing-in ceremony. Her election victory follows a turbulent period marked by disputes, legal uncertainties, and political tension after the December 7, 2024, general elections.

Initially, the outcome of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election was inconclusive due to irregularities in vote collation, leading to a suspension of results. The Electoral Commission, following weeks of investigation and court proceedings, ordered a re-run in 19 out of the 37 polling stations within the constituency. The rerun was successfully held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

In a tightly contested finish, Ewurabena Aubynn overturned the seat in favour of the NDC, securing 34,090 votes against incumbent Nana Owusu Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 33,881 votes. The final declaration was made by the Electoral Commission at its Greater Accra Regional office.

However, the rerun was marred by scenes of violence and chaos. Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was physically assaulted by unidentified thugs at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station. According to eyewitness reports, including TV3’s Stanley Nii Blewu, Koomson was kicked in the groin and beaten on the ground before police officers intervened and rushed her to safety.

In a related incident at the same polling station, the NPP’s Deputy National Organiser, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was also assaulted by unknown individuals. The motive behind these coordinated attacks remains unclear, but authorities are expected to launch an investigation.

Despite the disruptions, Ewurabena Aubynn’s win has been hailed by supporters as a turning point for Ablekuma North. Her campaign, centered on youth empowerment, healthcare, and infrastructural development, resonated with many first-time voters and frustrated constituents.

Today’s swearing-in marks not only a personal victory for Aubynn but also a broader political shift in one of Accra’s most competitive constituencies. It sets the stage for what her supporters believe will be a new era of inclusive and accountable governance.
