Elections 2024: Votes for Late Akua Donkor Will Be Rejected – Electoral Commission Declares

Accra, Ghana
The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced that any votes cast for the late Madam Akua Donkor in the upcoming 2024 presidential election will be treated as rejected ballots. This decision comes after it was confirmed that her image and party logo will remain on the ballot paper despite her passing earlier this year.
In a press release dated November 22, 2024, the EC clarified that such votes will not be included in the count of valid votes. “Votes cast in favor of Madam Akua Donkor will NOT be added to the Valid Votes Cast,” the statement, signed by Deputy Chairman of Operations Samuel Tettey, read.
The Commission explained that this step was necessary due to the timing of her demise, which occurred after the ballot papers had already been printed. While her name will still appear on the ballot, the EC emphasized that all voters should take note of the implications to avoid any confusion on election day.
Informing Key Stakeholders

The EC assured the public that all its staff, both permanent and temporary, as well as the agents representing various presidential candidates, have been informed of this directive. This measure is part of efforts to ensure clarity and fairness in the electoral process.
Public Reactions and Concerns
The decision has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some voters have raised concerns about why her name and party logo could not be removed from the ballot before voting begins. Others, however, have praised the Commission for making the situation clear and taking a transparent approach to managing votes cast for the late politician.
A Look at Akua Donkor’s Legacy
Madam Akua Donkor, founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), was a well-known political figure in Ghana. She was celebrated for her straightforwardness and advocacy for farmers’ rights and the welfare of the underprivileged. Her passing earlier this year was widely mourned across the country.
Preparing for a Transparent Election
As Ghana gears up for the 2024 presidential election, the EC’s announcement serves as a reminder for voters to pay close attention to their choices on the ballot. The Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election and urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully.
This development, though unusual, highlights the EC’s dedication to ensuring that electoral processes remain credible, even in unforeseen circumstances.
