Defence Minister Accuses Former NPP Government of Neglecting Presidential Jet

Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has attributed the current unserviceable state of the presidential jet to neglect by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In a Facebook post on Friday, May 23, 2025, Dr. Boamah revealed that the aircraft’s fuel tank is corroded, rendering the jet unfit for use. He stated that the jet is currently undergoing extensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul abroad, a process he described as “three months of therapy” .
Dr. Boamah’s comments come in response to criticisms from some NPP members regarding Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s use of a chartered private jet for her return from the United Kingdom on May 22, 2025. The Vice President had been on medically induced leave, and her mode of travel sparked debate about government spending .

Addressing these concerns, Dr. Boamah emphasized that the decision to charter a private jet was necessitated by the presidential aircraft’s unserviceable condition. He asserted that the previous administration’s failure to maintain the jet adequately led to its deterioration .

The Defence Minister’s remarks have intensified discussions about the management and maintenance of state assets, particularly in the context of official travel arrangements for high-ranking government officials.
