Govt renews curfew in Bawku, enforces ban on offensive weapons

The Minister for InteriorMohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has officially renewed the curfew on Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas following critical recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC). This decisive move aims to maintain peace and safeguard residents amid the ongoing tensions in the area. The renewed curfew takes effect starting Monday, March 3, 2025.

Under the current directive, the curfew hours will remain from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and will be subject to review or renewal after one week based on the prevailing security situation.

In addition to the curfew extension, the Interior Minister firmly reiterated the ban on carrying offensive weapons, arms, or ammunition within Bawku and its surrounding communities. He warned that anyone found violating this directivewill face immediate arrest and prosecution to ensure strict compliance with security measures.

The Bawku Municipality has been under curfew since November 2021 due to persistent chieftaincy conflicts, which have led to significant unrest and tragic loss of lives.

Authorities continue to urge residents to fully cooperate with security services and adhere to all restrictions, as the government remains committed to restoring lasting peace and stability in the region. The renewed curfew serves as a vital step towards preventing further violence and protecting innocent lives.

For the safety of all, the Ministry advises the public to remain vigilant, respect the curfew hours, and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
