A recent News report has revealed internal tensions within the Ghana Police Service as Commissioner of Police (COP) Kofi Boakye is reportedly against Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s continued tenure as the Inspector General of Police (IGP). This surprising revelation was made by Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, via his verified Facebook page.

Dampare’s Leadership and Support for Retention

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who took over as acting IGP in August 2021 following the retirement of James Oppong-Boanuh, has since implemented major reforms to enhance professionalism within the police force. Officially confirmed as IGP in October 2021, his tenure has been largely commended, especially for maintaining security during the tense 2024 Ghanaian general elections.

With the transition of power to President John Dramani Mahama, many citizens and stakeholders have publicly advocated for Dampare’s retention. However, reports indicate that COP Kofi Boakye—once thought to be an ally of Dampare—is now pushing for a leadership change within the police force.

Will IGP Dampare Stay or Go?

According to Paul Adom-Otchere’s post, Boakye may have the final say on whether Dampare remains as IGP, and it seems he is not in favor of his continuation.

“COP Kofi Boakye may have the final say on whether Dampare remains as IGP, but we hear his answer is a NO!! But why … join us for the details tonight!” – Paul Adom-Otchere, via Facebook.

As tensions rise, this internal power struggle within the Ghana Police Service has sparked intense debate. The big question remains: Will President Mahama retain IGP Dampare or bow to pressure for a new police chief? The coming days are expected to bring more clarity to this developing situation.
