Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU): Shaping the Future of Technology-Driven Education in Ghana

Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has earned a strong reputation as a leading force in technology-focused higher education, playing a vital role in empowering innovation and supporting national development through cutting-edge programs and research.
From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition
Established in November 2005, GCTU has evolved into one of Ghana’s most respected universities, known for academic excellence, industry collaboration, and groundbreaking research. With a clear vision of providing globally competitive, technology-driven education, the university inspires both students and faculty to continuously push the boundaries of knowledge.
The Ghana Communications Technology University officially started its journey in March 2006, after gaining accreditation from the National Accreditation Board. By August 2006, the university welcomed its first batch of 350 students, marking the beginning of a steady growth journey. By 2017, student enrollment had risen to around 7,000.
A defining moment came in August 2020, when GCTU was granted full public university status through the GCTU Act 2020 (Act 1022). This milestone cemented GCTU’s reputation as a leader in technology-based education, meeting both national and global development needs.
Strong Leadership and Dynamic Governance

The university operates under a well-structured governance system, led by a visionary University Council and a dedicated leadership team that includes the Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Deans, and administrative staff. Together, they steer the university’s growth, ensuring it remains innovative and responsive to global trends.
Global Partnerships and International Exposure
At the heart of GCTU’s success is its focus on international collaborations. Through partnerships with Coventry University (UK), Anhalt University of Applied Sciences (Germany), and Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (India), students gain access to world-class educational experiences.
These dual-degree programs allow students to earn internationally recognized qualifications while studying in Ghana. This innovative approach reduces financial burdens and provides students with global exposure. These partnerships also support joint research projects, student exchanges, and global knowledge sharing.
Academic Excellence with Practical Focus
The Ghana Communications Technology University, GCTU, offers programs designed to bridge theory and practice, preparing students to excel in Ghana’s fast-evolving digital economy. Academic fields include engineering, computing, information systems, and IT business, all tailored to meet industry demands.
The university also offers graduate programs in fields like business administration, ICT, and management, designed to upskill professionals and provide practical solutions for modern business challenges.
State-of-the-Art Campuses Across Ghana
GCTU’s campuses in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, along with learning centers in Ho, Koforidua, and Nungua, are equipped with modern labs, advanced technology, and collaborative learning spaces. These facilities create an enabling environment where students thrive. The multiple campuses and centers also promote inclusivity, ensuring students from across the country have access to quality technology-driven education.
Industry Collaboration and Real-World Training
A key part of GCTU’s educational philosophy is hands-on learning. Through partnerships with leading telecommunications, ICT, and business firms, students benefit from internships, mentorship, and practical projects, giving them real-world experience before graduation. This approach makes GCTU graduates highly sought after both locally and internationally.
Visionary Leadership Under Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa

GCTU’s forward-thinking approach is driven by Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, a distinguished academic, researcher, and administrator. As Vice-Chancellor, Professor Afoakwa brings his rich expertise in food science and technology, alongside a strong commitment to academic innovation and industry relevance. Under his leadership, GCTU has strengthened its focus on entrepreneurship, cutting-edge research, and a future-ready academic culture.
A Catalyst for Innovation and National Development
