The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has summoned Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following the emergence of a viral video showing him handing an undisclosed amount of foreign currency—reportedly in US dollars—to evangelist and former fetish priestess, Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage, widely circulated on social media, captures Gyamfi in what appears to be a personal encounter with Nana Agradaa. The purpose and nature of the cash handover remain unclear, but the optics of a senior public servant giving money to a controversial religious figure have ignited a firestorm of speculation and public backlash.

Critics have pointed to the video as potentially undermining President John Dramani Mahama’s recently launched Code of Conduct for Public Officials, which emphasizes integrity, accountability, and transparency in public service.

Sammy Gyamfi’s Response

In response to the incident, Sammy Gyamfi issued a public apology on May 11, describing the act as a private gesture of kindness that was never intended for public attention. He acknowledged the disapproval from some quarters, including his own political allies, and offered a heartfelt apology.

Public Reactions

The controversy has also drawn criticism from former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak, who argued that such actions could destabilize the local currency and undermine economic confidence. He emphasized the need for public officeholders to demonstrate faith in Ghana’s currency and avoid forex giveaways that could weaken the economy.

As the situation unfolds, the Chief of Staff is treating the matter with urgency, given the political sensitivity and reputational risks involved. The incident has sparked widespread public criticism and raised concerns over the ethical conduct of public officials.
