Chairman Wontumi Faces Fraud, Money Laundering, and Financial Loss Probe – Deputy Attorney-General Confirms

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
This revelation was made by Ghana’s Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, who confirmed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is spearheading the investigation. EOCO is also working with international partners to trace possible links to transnational organized crime.
EOCO Leads High-Stakes Probe
According to credible reports, Dr. Srem-Sai stated that EOCO’s investigation includes asset-tracing efforts to prevent dissipation of suspected illicit wealth. The office is said to be considering seizure and forfeiture of certain assets pending the outcome of the investigations.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. He was subsequently transferred to EOCO custody, where he underwent intense interrogation.
Detention, Bail, and Political Fallout
Following hours of questioning, Chairman Wontumi was granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two sureties—both to be justified. As of the latest updates, he remains in custody after failing to meet the bail terms.

His arrest has triggered sharp political reactions. The Minority in Parliament has expressed strong concerns over what they describe as “unjust and politically motivated” bail conditions. In protest, they have boycotted parliamentary proceedings and staged a peaceful demonstration outside EOCO headquarters.
Sources close to the Attorney-General’s office indicated that this is part of a broader anti-corruption drive and legal efforts to hold public figures accountable, regardless of their political affiliations.
The outcome of this high-profile investigation could have significant political and legal ramifications ahead of Ghana’s next general elections.
