British National, Ghanaian Customs Officer, and Airport Porter Arrested for Smuggling 53.6kg of Cannabis at Kotoka

International Drug Syndicate Foiled at Kotoka Airport
Authorities at Kotoka International Airport have intercepted a major drug smuggling attempt involving a British national, a Ghanaian customs officer, and an airport porter, all arrested for attempting to traffic 53.6 kilograms of cannabis.
The arrests, made on Monday, May 13, 2025, followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), with support from other security agencies stationed at the airport.
Details of the Operation
According to NACOC officials, the suspects attempted to smuggle the drugs out of Ghana via a Turkish Airlines flight bound for the United Kingdom. The British national was intercepted as he tried to check in a suitcase containing cannabis concealed in packages wrapped in black polythene.
Investigations revealed that the airport porter had initially received the bag from an unidentified individual and handed it over to the customs officer, who was expected to clear it through screening undetected. All three suspects are currently in custody, assisting with further investigations. Authorities believe the operation may be part of a larger drug trafficking network using insiders at the airport.

Commitment to Combatting Drug Smuggling
The Narcotics Control Commission reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on illicit drug activities at all ports of entry and exit in Ghana. In a press release, the Commission urged the public and airport staff to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could undermine the country’s international security image.
