We didn’t receive money from NPP in 2024; allegations preposterous – CPP fires back

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has strongly dismissed allegations that it received financial backing from the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government ahead of the 2024 elections.

The denial follows claims made by former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, currently on trial for allegedly misappropriating GH¢49 million in state funds.

Adu-Boahene’s Explosive Allegations

In a memo to the National Security Coordinator, Adu-Boahene alleged that part of the funds was distributed to opposition parties for covert operations.
He claimed that GH₵8.3 million was spent on “communications equipment” for an opposition party and nearly GH₵1 million went to legislators to pass key security laws.

CPP Hits Back: “We Got Nothing from NPP”

However, CPP General SecretaryKwame Nkrumah Botsio, has rubbished the claims.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, he stated:

“We did not receive any support [from the NPP]. We received support from well-wishers, and if we had received anything close to what is being bandied about, we would have won the election.”

Botsio highlighted the CPP’s severe financial constraints during the campaign:

“We were so resource-strapped, we did not even have one TV advert, not one radio advert, and just had one billboard.”

He also condemned the alleged misuse of taxpayer funds:

“Whether in a rich country or a poor country, you don’t just dole out US$500,000 to an opposition party for whatever reason, especially as it falls outside of security reasons.”

Grassroots, Not Gadgets: CPP’s DIY Election Monitoring

The General Secretary detailed how the CPP managed its election collation efforts:

“We did the collation ourselves on my laptop, and our regional chairmen did the same at their level. We did not have any collation equipment at all except our laptops.”

NDC Also Distances Itself from Allegations

Meanwhile, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also challenged Adu-Boahene’s claims.

Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, told JoyNews:

“On authority, I’m telling you the NDC has nothing to do with what came out of that story.”

He added that claims about opposition parties benefiting from the funds were baseless:

“My opponent would give me resources to defeat him in an election? Does that make sense?”

Dr Tanko further asserted that some minor opposition parties were often aligned with the NPP rather than working to unseat them.

“When we were in IPAC, anytime the NDC opposed the EC and NPP, those parties sided with the EC and NPP. The NDC has nothing to do with this.”

High-Stakes Corruption Case Unfolding

The allegations come amid a high-profile corruption trial that is revealing explosive details about alleged financial irregularities during the 2024 election period.

Dr Tanko dismissed any suggestion that funds may have been received without his knowledge:

“I can speak on authority—it’s not possible at all. These guys are just clutching at straws.”

He concluded by supporting the Attorney General’s prosecution of Adu-Boahene:

“They should go and negotiate a plea bargain; otherwise, he could be looking at 25 years.”
