AG Refers Joseph Yamin and Abanga Alhassan to EOCO Over Galamsey Allegations

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has directed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to initiate investigations into alleged illegal mining activities involving two high-profile political figures — Joseph Yamin and Abanga Yakubu Alhassan. The directive forms part of renewed government efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which continues to pose serious environmental and economic threats in Ghana.

Joseph Yamin, a senior member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, a known political figure, have both been named in reports alleging their involvement in unauthorized mining operations. The AG’s referral aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the fight against galamsey, irrespective of political affiliations.

Government Steps Up Anti-Galamsey Efforts with Political Will

In a brief issued on Monday, Dr. Ayine reiterated the government’s resolve to root out all forms of illegal mining, stressing that “no one is above the law.” He emphasized that credible leads and verified intelligence regarding the two individuals necessitated a full investigation by EOCO to determine the veracity of the claims and take appropriate legal steps where necessary.

The directive comes amid rising pressure on authorities to deal decisively with illegal mining and its associated degradation of farmlands, rivers, and forest reserves. Environmental groups and civil society organisations have long called for strong action against politically shielded operators. This latest development may signal a broader shift toward bipartisan enforcement of mining laws.
