South African police have launched an investigation into the killing of a foreign national who was allegedly beaten to death by a crowd of about 50 people in Durban.

According to the South African Police Service, the victim, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was assaulted by the group and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the incident occurred while a group of people were marching through central Durban. During the march, two men reportedly broke away from the crowd and approached the victim, before he was attacked by approximately 50 people.

Authorities have not disclosed the victim’s nationality, and the motive behind the killing remains unknown.

The incident comes amid months of anti-migrant demonstrations across South Africa, with some protests escalating into violence and attracting international condemnation. The unrest has also forced thousands of migrants from other African countries to leave communities affected by the demonstrations.

Earlier this month, anti-migrant protests in Durban and Soweto, a township in Johannesburg, turned violent. Foreign-owned businesses were looted and vehicles set ablaze during demonstrations against the processing of asylum applications at a refugee reception centre.
