The Ashanti Region is expected to have a second Passport Application Centre (PAC) by March 2027, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs moves to improve access to passport services and ease congestion at the existing facility in Kumasi.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the plan during a working visit to the Kumasi Passport Application Centre on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The new facility will be established in Mampong, where the ministry has already secured a building for the project. Preparations to equip the premises are expected to begin in the coming weeks ahead of its planned opening within the first quarter of 2027.

According to the minister, the expansion has become necessary due to the growing demand for passport services in the Ashanti Region, one of the most populous regions in the country.

“The Ashanti Region should not have only one passport application centre,” he said.

He noted that the establishment of the additional centre would help reduce the pressure on staff at the Kumasi facility while making the passport application process more accessible to residents across the region.

Once operational, the Mampong centre is expected to ease overcrowding in Kumasi and provide a more convenient option for applicants from Mampong and surrounding communities. The project is also anticipated to create employment opportunities.

The facility will further reduce the need for residents in the area to travel long distances to attend appointments for biometric data capture, helping to make passport acquisition less stressful.

The development forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to modernise and expand passport services nationwide.

Other measures introduced as part of these reforms include reduced passport application fees, free and faster delivery services, an electronic tracking system and plans to extend passport application facilities across all 16 regions of Ghana.

The proposed Mampong centre is expected to play a key role in improving access to passport services in the Ashanti Region and ensuring that more residents can complete their applications with greater convenience.
