The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed concern over the Black Stars’ disappointing performances in the opening matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, calling for attention to the structural challenges facing Ghana football.

Ghana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving the four-time African champions without a point after their first two Group C fixtures.

The two defeats have placed the team under pressure to improve its performance and revive its chances of qualifying for the continental tournament.

The team’s struggles have also coincided with the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who stepped down following the disappointing results.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3, Mr Adams acknowledged the concerns surrounding the national team’s performance and pointed to broader problems within the country’s football system.

“We are worried about the performance of the Black Stars. The issue with our football is structural, involving both leadership and talent,” the Buem Member of Parliament said.

The Black Stars are expected to return to action next month, when they face Somalia in two consecutive matches in the third and fourth rounds of the qualifiers.

An interim technical team appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will take charge of the team for the upcoming fixtures as Ghana seeks to get its qualification campaign back on track.

The GFA is also expected to name a permanent head coach before the team’s final group matches next year.

Ghana will be hoping to secure a place at the 2027 AFCON tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, after failing to qualify for the 2025 edition held in Morocco.
