Ghana Joins International Big Cat Alliance

In a related development, Mr Ablakwa announced that Ghana has officially joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), an international initiative dedicated to the protection and conservation of big cat species.

He said Ghana’s membership was formalised through the presentation of a signed agreement and instrument of acceptance to India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S. Jaishankar, during his visit to the country.

“It was with great pleasure that I presented the signed agreement and instrument of acceptance to the distinguished External Affairs Minister of India, His Excellency Dr. S. Jaishankar during his visit to Ghana,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

The IBCA was launched in 2023 through an initiative led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside international partners, to promote the conservation of seven major big cat species, including lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, pumas and cheetahs.

Mr Ablakwa said President John Dramani Mahama was committed to expanding Ghana’s wildlife reserves, protecting endangered big cats and intensifying efforts to tackle poaching.

Ghana’s entry into the alliance is expected to strengthen its engagement in international conservation efforts while supporting broader initiatives to protect wildlife and preserve biodiversity.
