A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Dr Sammy Ayeh, has urged the State to take appropriate action against individuals who issue serious threats to the life of the President.
Dr Ayeh said citizens have every right to criticise the President, disagree with government policies, support opposition parties and demand political change as part of their democratic freedoms.
However, he stressed that such rights do not extend to making threats against another person’s life.
“Opposition is not a crime, and disagreement is not treason,” he said. “But freedom of speech does not include the freedom to threaten violence.”
In a Facebook post, the Presidential Staffer noted that the President occupies the highest executive office in the country, making the protection of the Head of State a constitutional and national responsibility rather than a political favour.
He cautioned that failing to respond appropriately to credible threats against a President could create the impression that the country is unable to protect its leaders.
At the same time, Dr Ayeh emphasised the need for the law to be applied fairly and without political bias.
“A person should not be arrested simply because they are an opposition member or a critic of the government.”
According to him, the key consideration should be whether an individual has committed an offence and whether sufficient evidence exists to establish the alleged crime.
He called on the police to conduct thorough investigations, prosecutors to rely on evidence, and the courts to determine the guilt or otherwise of accused persons.
Dr Ayeh further stressed that the rights of every accused person must be respected throughout the legal process.
His comments follow the recent arrest of a nurse reportedly linked to an individual known as “Ghana Jollof”, who has been accused of inciting violence through TikTok.
