A fire outbreak at the SIC Insurance office building in Takoradi has destroyed parts of New Day TV’s studio and affected two other offices, equipment and documents.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the fire reportedly starting from the studio of New Day TV, which operates from the building.
The blaze later spread to portions of the first, second and third floors of the facility, affecting offices including the SIC Life Marketing Office and Accounts Office.
Several sections of the New Day TV premises were also damaged, with office equipment, documents and other materials reportedly destroyed by the fire.
Protective and offshore equipment belonging to Greenfields and stored in the building was also affected.
The total value of property and equipment destroyed or damaged is yet to be determined, as authorities and the affected organisations continue to assess the extent of the losses.
The Western Region Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), ADO I Linda Pongo, said combustible materials within the affected area contributed to the intensity of the fire.
She explained that materials such as sound-absorbing foam and plastic TNG ceiling materials helped fuel the blaze.
According to ADO I Linda Pongo, the GNFS received a distress call at approximately 9:32 a.m. about a fire at the New Day TV studio.
Firefighters from the Sekondi, Apremdo and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) fire stations were dispatched to the scene.
Three fire tenders were deployed as firefighters worked to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to other parts of the building.
Eyewitnesses describe fire response
Eyewitnesses said smoke quickly filled parts of the building as workers and emergency responders attempted to deal with the situation.
One eyewitness recounted that the GPHA Fire Service initially could not start firefighting because electricity to the building had not been disconnected.
“When the fire started, the GPHA Fire Service arrived at the scene, but they could not immediately begin firefighting operations. They explained that they had to wait for ECG to disconnect the power supply to the building before they could safely commence efforts to put out the fire,” the eyewitness said.
Workers and other occupants were evacuated from the affected areas as firefighters battled the flames.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
The GNFS is expected to conduct further investigations to determine what triggered the outbreak and assess the full extent of the damage.
There were no confirmed reports of deaths or serious injuries at the time of filing.
A detailed assessment of the affected offices and equipment is expected to provide an estimated value of the losses.
