hana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced that it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a significant rise in the dam’s water level.
The company said the water level has risen to 45.2 feet due to heavy rainfall upstream of the dam, coupled with continued rains within the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.
According to GWL, the current level is nearing the 46-foot threshold, necessitating the resumption of controlled spillage as a precautionary measure to protect the dam and surrounding communities.
The company has therefore advised residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate their homes and move to safer locations before the spillage begins.
Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant, comply with official evacuation instructions and avoid any activities that could put their lives at risk.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, residents’ associations and other relevant stakeholders have been asked to take immediate precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.
Communities expected to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and other surrounding areas.
GWL said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as conditions develop.
“The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” the company said.
