The New Patriotic Party stated that the internal review of the suggested constitutional reforms has been finalized together with the position paper and delivered to flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for approval.
The development highlighted a significant progress in the NPP’s efforts to create a solidified position on the amendments that could eventually be exhibited to Ghanaians through a referendum.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Manhyia South MP and a member of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, emphasized that the party had completed its evaluation after comprehensive consultations involving legal experts and former Attorneys-General.
He stated that the party had taken the matter seriously because the proposed amendments could have far-reaching implications for Ghana’s constitutional order.
The NPP’s review comes against the background of the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendations and the government’s position on the proposed reforms.
The party has indicated that it wants to determine whether the government’s proposals accurately reflect the views expressed during the earlier consultation process.
The party believes the involvement of experienced constitutional lawyers is necessary because the proposed changes require careful legal and political examination.
The review is also intended to give the NPP a coherent position before public campaigning begins.
This is significant because contradictory statements from individual party members could weaken the party’s ability to communicate its position effectively.
