President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), which will focus on strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution across the continent.
President Mahama was welcomed at the airport by Angola’s Minister for Planning, Victor Hugo Guilherme.
The high-level summit, scheduled for August 30, 2026, will be chaired by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who also serves as the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
A key focus of the summit will be the consideration and adoption of a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
African leaders are expected to assess existing peace and security frameworks and agree on practical measures to improve coordination, responsiveness, implementation and financing of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
The summit comes at a time when Africa continues to face complex security challenges, particularly in Sudan, the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and Mozambique.
President Mahama and other African leaders are expected to deliberate on actionable strategies to strengthen regional stability, enhance peacebuilding efforts and improve the continent’s collective capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts.
