Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, says he is prepared to explore ways to raise funds for the construction of the National Cathedral if Parliament approves his nomination and the project receives the support of the Christian community and President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr Ayariga explained that although he had concerns about how the project was handled under the previous administration, he remains supportive of the broader idea of establishing a National Cathedral for Ghana’s Christian community.
“I want to assure this House that if I am approved, I will engage the leadership of the Christian Community and if they still want to have it, I will engage with the President and if it is his wish, I will mobilise funds for its construction,” he said.
He noted that Ghana’s strong religious character makes places of worship an important part of national life, citing the widespread presence of churches, mosques and other religious facilities across the country.
According to Mr Ayariga, there is therefore nothing fundamentally wrong with the concept of a National Cathedral.
However, he raised concerns about certain aspects of the project’s implementation, particularly the choice of location.
He stressed that any attempt to revive or complete the project should begin with consultations involving the Christian community and President Mahama before efforts are made to mobilise resources for its construction.
