A 49-year-old Nigerian national, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks by the Accra Circuit Court over his alleged involvement in a series of robbery attacks.

Okechuku Maazi faces eight counts of conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with alleged attacks in Tema, Spintex and Labone. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

According to the prosecution, the accused is allegedly a member of a robbery syndicate comprising six people who target individuals after they conduct bank transactions.

The prosecution told the court that the syndicate operates across Ivory Coast and Benin and had been under police surveillance since May 2026, following an alleged robbery attack at Spintex.

The case took a dramatic turn on August 13 when police engaged two suspected members of the syndicate in a gunfire exchange at Labone. The two suspects were shot dead during the encounter.

Three other suspects allegedly linked to the group remain at large, according to the prosecution.

Counsel for Okechuku Maazi applied for bail, but the request was opposed by the prosecution. Prosecutors argued that the accused posed a flight risk and that investigations into the alleged robbery network were still ongoing.

The court subsequently refused the bail application and ordered that Okechuku Maazi remain in police custody.

He is expected to reappear before the court on September 2 as investigations continue into the Labone robbery case.
